What to look at
MOT history
You can check a vehicle’s MOT history on gov.uk with its registration number. Look for repeated failures and advisories, and check that the mileage recorded at each test reads sensibly.
Service history
Ask for the service book or invoices. A van that works for a living should show that it has been looked after.
Load area
Check the floor, bulkhead and doors for damage from heavy loads, and the sills and wheel arches for rust.
Engine and gearbox
Listen for noise on a test drive, watch for smoke from the exhaust and check that the clutch bites cleanly.
Payload and towing
Check the handbook or the plate for the payload and the towing limit, and make sure they cover what you carry and tow.
Paperwork
The V5C registration document should match the vehicle: the registration number, the chassis number and the keeper’s details.
