Flatbed trailers
A flatbed is the all-round trailer for building materials, tools, bales and small machines. We sell flatbed trailers. These are the things to look at.

What to look at
Payload
The trailer’s plate normally shows its maximum weight (MAM). Take away its empty weight to find what you can load, and check that against the heaviest load you expect.
Length and width
Choose for the longest load you carry, but remember that a longer trailer is harder to reverse and to park.
Sides and tail
Drop sides make it easier to load from the side. A tail that folds down as a ramp helps with quad bikes and mowers.
Lashing points
Look for plenty of strong tie-down points in good condition. Every load needs securing, and good anchor points make that easier.
Deck
On a timber deck, look for rot and cracks, especially around the fixings. On a metal deck, look for dents and cracked welds.
Brakes
Small flatbeds are often unbraked, which keeps them light and easy to handle. Over 750kg loaded, a trailer must have working brakes.
Before you buy any trailer, read the buying advice. It covers your car’s towing limit, your licence and the weights to check.
