Goods trailers

A goods trailer is a general-purpose load carrier for trades, farms and households. We sell goods trailers. These are the things to look at.

What to look at

A tipper trailer with drop sides in a yard
  • Floor

Check plywood floors for soft spots and lifting edges, and metal floors for dents and cracks.

  • Sides, tailgate and ramp

Choose for what you load most. Mesh or solid sides keep loose items in, a tailgate helps with bulky ones, and a ramp lets you wheel a mower or barrow on.

  • Payload

Look on the plate for the trailer’s maximum weight (MAM) and take away its empty weight to find what you can carry.

  • Axle and tyres

Rock each wheel to feel for play, look for uneven tyre wear, and read the date code on each tyre.

  • Brakes and lights

Over 750kg loaded, a trailer must have working brakes. Plug it in and check every light, including the brake lights and indicators.

Before you buy any trailer, read the buying advice. It covers your car’s towing limit, your licence and the weights to check.
